everyone needs to read this piece by Himanshu Suri of das racist on what 9/11 and the subsequent events have had on South Asians. The blindly pro-patriot stance of the post-Bin Laden media and culture has already been incredibly violent towards South Asians and countless other people of color. Spread the word.

On 9/11/01, Himanshu Suri, writer and member of the rap group Das Racist, watched the Twin Towers fall from the window of his lower Manhattan high school. On 5/2/11, he began retweeting the most racist and offensive hate-mongering on Twitter surrounding the bin Laden killing. In this piece, he reflects on the anti-Muslim, anti-Middle Eastern, anti-South Asian racism he’s experienced for the last ten years.

This is awesome!  I would, however, like to note that the political climate is completely different than what it was immediately after 9/11.  It’s useful to draw parallels, but I think it’s important to note that tons of people can now relate to Arab and Muslim folks in new and inspiring ways as a result of the wave of protests and revolutions across North Africa and the Middle East.  We also have a pretty gnarly economic crisis now that has changed the debate around everything.
